New Foundations ... www.zahira.co.za

It beens a while since I posted or blogged for that matter on either of my blogs. Theres been a reason for this. More then anything i wanted to start anew. I thought that once I found the right host and started creating a new site [www.zahira.co.za], I would find peace and my love for blogging would continue.

But damn was I wrong. Not only did I start learning xml/html/design I became so fussy to a point of going through countless themes till I found the right one. A few of my friends even helped me out by other offering pearls of wisdom [thanks Saaleha] or testing out whether my themes actually worked or not on the various browsers available [thanks to saaleha, nafisa, killa and Aasia] and also for letting me know how much some themes SUCKED!!!

Guessing that's what friends are for :)

So to new beginnings and foundations and endeavours and here's to hoping that I can maintain this blog. Its been and uphill and it still feels like one, but you never know what the future holds and brings.

Kika-sack, Glaceau and 27 Dinner

So last nights 27 Dinner finally prompted me to blog. I know it’s been ages but something is brewing so watch this space. ;)

On another note the 27 Dinner was a bit different from normal. It was the 270second Unconference and a whole lot of babbling including some interesting points. That and we were treated to some amazing magic. So can’t really complain can I? and I got to see Heidi, Snappingturt le and gang again.

Meeting up with them is a rare so I look forward to these events just to reconnect.

Nic in his post a few days ago mentioned the Safari trip he was treated to by Glaceau for their new drink VitaminWater. The 27 Dinner gave us all a chance to get our grubby hands on some free samples and well Heidi made sure she had the one for a major hangover. Still need to ask her if it worked. I got my hands on the red coloured one they aptly label XXX (triple antioxidants). With the naming the drink I have to say that who ever did their marketing came up with some hilarious explanations to the drinks names.

Mine reads

“c’mon get your mind out of the gutter; we only named this drink xxx because it had the power of triple antioxidants …”

But I have a small problem with these drinks. How would I know its actually working? I understand you can most probably figure it out with the hangover one but what about the others? Also mine tastes like Squeez n Drink. Remember those lovely drinks growing up. I’m not saying that it tasting like that is a bad thing, actually it’s a good thing in my case, because I adored the Squeez n Drink range esp. the Red one like my XXX. But it makes me wonder then if the vitamin water is actually doing what it should be.

I have to say though that it was awesome to actually see the bottle filled to the top – touching the cap [see pic]. That is a rare attribute in any case whether its drinks or chips or any product.

Another awesome, brill point to my week is that I finally got to the post office and picked up my collector’s item FREE Kika-Sack box. Thanks thanks thanks guys.

Haven’t played this in ages but it will be good to get back into tapping around [though as a girl I am pretty pathetic lol]. I love footy and I loved attempting this during my campus days. I think I managed 2 taps before it hit the ground but I promised the guys at Kika-Sack that I will try my hand at it and video it as well. Yes you can ca

An Hour for OUR EARTH

With the way the world is turning and destruction is following the human race, whether natural or ‘economica’, it makes you wonder…WHY?

Maybe its our own fault that the world is finally crying out to be rescued, and well you can!!! March 28 is the day we all do something so small as turning off all our lights and electricity in celebration of Mother Earth. March 28 is Earth Hour. Switch of your lights at 20:30 for an hour to help save our world.

Rambling discoveries

An attempt at rediscovery and finding a way to write again...

There’s this place just north of Durban, that we use to frequent often growing up. It's also one of those special places to me. Surrounded by a nature reserve we use to go there on weekends for a braai and picnic or I use to escape there from campus when things were getting a bit much.

Once you head out on the yellow trail for a short hike, you can see the most amazing views. Rolling hills, topped with trees in all their finery, dressed in their best greens and the sweetest voices calling from nests among the finery. Walking through archways created by the overhanging branches and spotted and dotted with white flowers, you turn down the partway and climb endlessly to the bottom of till you feel the cool breeze rising from deep within the canopy calling your name. Inviting you towards the sound of rippling brooks and bubbling streams. As you move towards the sound and get closer and closer the soft sounds turn into faster waters, calling out.

Step through the breaking trees, not more then inkling in front of you runs a stream. Following it closely upstream, you can hear a deep gurgling rushing sound. A little further up and you see one of the most breathtaking, jaw dropping unspoilt wonders of nature. A waterfall gushing down into a dark whirlpool of water, it reminds you of a washing machine in spin cycle.

This is my place; this is the place that is special to me. That holds my breath and lets me breath again. Somewhere I feel at peace. I watch the falls. The gurgling plunge pool and I let it ease my worries and mind.

I miss that place. One day I will go back and find the peace so breathtaking, so brilliant, and so untouched by the outside world, by the mundane life that takes us on an ever fast moving race to the finish line. So much so that we don’t have a chance to stop and enjoy the wonders of the world around us.

Death to a Nation...or two

Its been forever since I last blogged properly. But that’s ok. I have come to terms with myself. The realization that the staunch once a week blogger does not exist anymore. She has moved on to realizing that life is more then blogging though I maybe shot by people since who I have converted to the bloggersphere.

I would be ever grateful to the friends I have met through my blog, but I am no more reliant nor self absorbed to want to blog everyday or every week for that matter.

Enough of the third person jargon.

Let me really bring to focus the main 'event' that has got me blogging again for the moment.

The atrocious attack and war being conducted by the Israelis [Zionists] against the poor innocent people in Gaza, leaves me crying tears of blood. To know that those living in Gaza are not only Muslims but also Christians and even those Jews who are helping with aid, are being killed leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. To say that we [the world] did not see this coming would be to ensure that we lived in our own little worlds with blinkers on.

I can go through all the madness again but the sickening within my stomach prevents me from doing so. I relive these events online, and through every possible media I can get my hands on and not forgetting those who are there and relaying it to me. And if I can't handle it through third parties my heart goes to all those living in the hallow of the deaf world. To not know whether your death will be next. To live in a deafened world.

I could blindly say that the Jews are to blame for this…for all of this. But then I would be as naïve as the next person. For I believe myself more informed and knowledgeable to know the difference between a Jew and a Zionist. And this is in deed the doing of the Zionists. No not all Jews openly condemn these attacks that are being carried out but here again I will not fault them, as I know they like everyone of us has been taught a certain way through out their lives and therefore can not see right and wrong.

I completely blame the Zionists and those in power who are not saying anything against them. Israel is doing this on the task of their parliament but is this the true will of Israel of those knowing that it is election year for them and they can only win votes but 'apparently' safe guarding Israel from Hamas.

I am left completely hopeless in knowing that the death toll that is ever increasing is strewn with innocent lives. The elimination of an entire generation. The risk of knowing that there maybe no more after these we lose who will stand up against the ugly mite that has become Israel. None to show us that we are being eaten alive by a monster which infests and festers within our skin to slowly deal us a terrible death.

With no warning and no barrier my sadness grows knowing and feeling that Gaza will be only the start and never the end.

Speak up presidents of nations, speak up president elects, speak up the people across the world and stop the holocaust you blindly refused to see in World War 2 start over now in your era. In the era you choose to rule and live in. Leave not your silence as a legacy to your people and to those after us. Stop it while you can. Before it blows up to deal us a deathly bomb as an ever present reminder like Auschwitz, as Hiroshima is known.

I could go on, but then I would run the risk of sounding like someone who is at risk of tripping on her tongue.

All I know for certain is that this is only the beginning of something.

Blood, Bombs, Guns...Adrenaline Rush!

I have been running around like a headless chicken and suffering from a huge dose of insomnia. Due to this I have been very much online with Twitter and the likes there of. No wonder on Wednesday night I got a little tweet to tell me about the events unfolding in Mumbai. I was shocked, horrified and dismayed.

Staying up till the morning [or rather not sleeping at all] I tracked events and at the same time felt helpless without satellite news and a working internet connection. Thank god Twitter can be easily accessed through your phone and as most of you know I can be highly addicted to my phone.

But this is not about twitter, though it was the first to bring the breaking news to people across the globe. Big thumbs up to citizen journalism and yes there is a place in the world for you guys but I have to say it is restricted to breaking news.

This is about the thoughts and horror stories that filled my head while watching events unfold. And know that its still happening 2 days on.

My first thoughts were of course who is claiming responsibility for these attacks. Will they again go after the usual "Muslim Terrorist" - those crazy fundamentals? Will India blame Pakistan for the attacks? Can this lead to a nuclear war? [Not forgetting that India and Pakistan both have nuclear warheads lying in their backyards]. Also was this was turning out to be India's 9/11. What action will the country take? Those questions can't be answered as yet since the gun battles are still going on. Attacking the Taj and Oberoi hotels was extremely clever planning and these gunmen were definitely not 'normal' islamic terrorists. Precise planning and tech capabilities are allowing them to run havoc in the financial capital of India.

Worrying as this all was I was sad that I was missing from the action. I was actually wishing I was there reporting being in the thick of it all. Reminded me of the adrenaline rush I felt during May this year in South Africa, when the xenophobic attacks were happening.

No I am not saying that I condone the attacks. I CONDEM it completely but as a journalist its in my blood to want to be there, to feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins. To let it all subside and to let the tears come at the horror that you see and witness. I am human and tears will be natural for I am a girl with feelings. But I would still want to be there. I want to tell the news and I want to tell it as it happens. If it was not for those witnessing it first hand I would not have heard about it till the next morning like a lot of my friends.

Where am I leading with all this?

Well no where exactly. Its just me putting my thoughts down and letting you all know about it. Its me agreeing that citizen journalism rocks for breaking news. Its me showing that I'm a little crazy wanting to be in the thick of things and not caring about my own self. Its just all about me.

On another note on me, another reason I have been running around without a head [see first line on chickens] is I'm writing a few articles for World Aids Day on Monday. Have you ever tried coordinating an article with a round up from all parts of Africa?

Yicks its an intense hard process, but I pulled it off. Now its wait and see if the editor loves or hates it. [hoping loves it!!!]

Its hard doing these stories. You meet people living with the virus who give you hope and show you that love exists and then you meet others who make your heart break into a million pieces.

Hoping to have something written up for my blog on Monday. All depends on the madness that will arise with my stories from today till Sunday night.

Though we may all be in awe of this man and his achievements, for me the biggest question will be how will he be handling his foreign policy? This will be the main decision he will have to make and it will be done soon within the weeks. The president elect has a hard task ahead and now we will see if he can meet his commitments.

Love in the time of Crisis

The last week and this have been a crazy time and I know its not going to be any easier. My darling cousin got proposed/engaged to a friend of mine which is brilliant for me – I think. You maybe wondering why I wrote it as ‘proposal/engaged’, well that’s because I realized that to me it all means the same. I personally think that we – Indians – have a tendency of wanting to do too much. They come see the girl, then they come propose, then they have engagement, then its mendhi before the wedding, and even maybe a qwaali [think I spelt that wrong but it’s a music night or something], then its kataam night for the Muslims [were the Qur

an is completed to give the new couple blessing] AND THEN is the wedding…and walimah. So the problem was that none of us knew what to call this little event that took place. The boy’s side came and they put the ‘chain’ so I’m calling it an engagement…

Another thing that I maybe at fault in doing is that I’m looking too much into this thing. You lost as to what I’m talking about right? Well I mean it’s my fav cousin [who is only 6months my junior] and a friend of mine who I get along with brilliantly. So it should work out perfectly …right? Or maybe not. [I am not talking about their marriage here but about my relationship with them]. I mean who am I to think that I can 24/7 hang out with them when they all married. Eish the issues lol but I’m over glad its them together. They happy and good together and the advantage is that I can barge into their home when ever. **big grin on my face**cheeks and all**

Though people are thinking that I would be next since she got hitched but I keep reminding them that I’m not ready for it nor do I want it right now. “I have too much to do and too much to see.” But they have it stuck still in their heads that I will casually find someone all of a sudden and get buckled. Like I mean do they not realize that my life is now definitely off on a tangent to another place? At one stage I may have welcomed the fact that I would find someone or had found someone to settle down with, but recently I realized the more I stayed away from home and the more I got to know me, the more I didn’t want it. Don’t get me wrong… if someone comes along and its meant to be it will be and I will not stop the process, but right now I will definitely not see what is in front of me because I choose not to. I choose to see what life has to offer me with out the need of having to have a better half. They say the better half would complete me and that I will see the world with him in a different light but I want to see it in the light that belongs solely to me. “Mine all mine.” Selfish as that may sound I know that if I didn’t try to do everything I wanted to now I would regret jumping into something I don’t want at the moment.

“I will get married to the one I want and need, when I want and need him, not before and not after.”

[maybe one day I will choke on those words but till then I will live with it!]

On to more brilliant and informative issues. I have come to realize that the world is a whole lot of superficial hogwash. Economic crisis, financial meltdown, food crisis, climate crisis, war crisis, nuclear crisis…damn only CRISIS’!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now really [come to think of it why would you get married and have kids with all these crisis’?] is this what the world is coming to? At the moment with the job I have I seem to be only coming across the bad in the world. Its making me grow a thicker skin that I feel I am loosing myself. I’m at that point were if I don’t step back these issues and the human suffering that comes with it will wash of my back and mean nothing to me. Its like watching the bad on tv continuously so that it goes in one ear comes out another and that you don’t give a flying F^%k what happens. “if its not me or my family why should I bother?” Emotionally detachment from all that surrounds you.

With out human emotion there is no love, no hope and no promise of a better tomorrow…

PS: wonder if anyone got my title ;)

PPS: Watching the US elections closely…finally stretch…what surprises are in store?!?!? Anyone?

And have you noticed how the elections are overshadowing the financial meltdown? Attention has moved away from the bail outs and are now on Sarah Palins phathetic attempts at dressing and economics….Palin and Bush = Dumb and Dumber :P

R-O-A-R

It’s been a crazy few days. Running around a zoo with little kids was the one of the most enjoyable parts of the weekend that passed. Its amazing how they make you want to see life in a different way. The kids that I was running after was 7 out of the big batch that arrived from the day care and aftercare centre south of Johannesburg. Osizweni – a Zulu term for ‘place of help’ – looks after orphans or children coming from broken homes. It is an Islamic Relief project and I firmly believe that it is doing an incredible job.

Most of the kids [or rather all of them] had never visited a zoo before and the most they know about the animals are those they hear in stories. “Roar like a lion”… “meow”… “no a cat meows”… “ok”

A small conversation passed between myself and some of the little ones and volunteers.

“Whats big and grey and uses its nose to eat with?”

“My favourite animal is a baboon. Can we see that?”

“most definitely”

We didn’t end up seeing the baboon though but a rather big gorilla which put on a splendid show for the kids by obliging and coming out of his little house in the enclosure and posing on the rocks before heading onto the ‘jungle gym’. Getting to leave that place may have taken a good half and hour of our time. Also it was about then that we started realising we had one little terror who wished to join the animals at every opportunity he got.

Little Eden kept us running on our toes but I thoroughly had a ball of a time with him. Unlike the rest who were quiet he and Yolanda – a pretty little thing with her corn rows and sunglasses – made my day. They were noisy, naughty and fun as little kids should be.

“So can you roar like a lion?”

“R-O-A-R”

“G-R-O-W-L”

The day moved steadily on. With loads of animals and really not much time to see them all, we minimised the animals we saw to keep it to the big ones and the ones they knew and recognised. Stamping towards the animals we came to the playful seals and Eden thought he could catch a swim with them. Nothing fazed him at all and this helped to get the others more and more involved.

Question – why does the lion enclosure and all the good animals have to be so so far away?

“I’m tired now. Its so hot. SIGH.”

“Let’s stop for a water break guys. Right everyone have some water.”

Lions, and tigers and bears and elephants and snakes and gorillas – lets not forget the snakes – thrilled them to bits. But where were the tigers hiding. “We can’t see them”.

Not knowing where they could be we walked towards a building that formed part of the enclosure. Strict instructions at the door. “Do not go pass the yellow line. You little ones hold on to an adults hands,” said the lady at the door. Fortunately she managed to catch us before Eden or Yolanda went through without us. “Where are they?” “There they are.” Seeing them Yolanda and Thembisile clutched tightly onto my hands. While thankfully John – an older child – had Eden by the hand while ‘Aunty Taahira’ and Aunty Dinah held the rest.

The day was broken with lunch and a rest and a birthday for one of the dear care givers at the centre.

I would write more about the events that occurred after including my run with the 3 older ones in our group from the main entrance to the croc area on the other side of the world but the story would just be a ramble.

Re-emergence...

I've been ordered by BiBi to write again.
You may be wondering about the long and lengthy absence but I've been a tad disinterested in life at present. Trying to manage through to the end of Ramadan was not that difficult. The idea of going home for Eid was making it all the more easier.

But my concentration has been shot out the window/door/house/building. And this has left me in limbo not knowing where to go and what to do. Also other factors have been steadily creeping back into my life. No matter how hard I try to keep them away. Some one told me the reason for it was I never dealt with it when I should have at the right time and that’s the reason they coming back. But is there ever a right way to deal with anything?

So noting that I decided to finally start getting back on track. Been reading loads of blogs even though I have not written any in awhile and some have been profound and have started making me rethink life. Others are there just to put a smile on my face :)

Getting back into the blogging world again... what is there really to write about? What would I say that could make any difference? Why would anyone want to even read my stuff?

Then I realised I write what I want for myself. Like most of my fellow bloggers at the moment are doing. So what is it that I want to say?
Should it be important or whimsical?

I think I rather leave it as a mash up of thoughts and ideas. So this is a very much mash up and quick recount of what's been happening.

Nothing beats travelling Africa and I hope to continue doing it.

Something that has caught my total attention has to be the huge American market rescue. With them failing so has ours. But the thing is why the F&^king H&ll are we still so economically attached to a floundering one. Have our markets not learnt since the great depression and so. Another thing if we have other markets which are now such awesome leaders why should America matter to us?

Then again I never studied ecos so I would have to ask for further clarification by my more competent friends on explaining the reason the rand is weaker to the dollar if the American market is collapsing?

In another direction…following on the Ever-Greats post on choices and loved ones…it got me thinking would I ever do anything that was a good choice?
What's a choice? Is what's good in my eye good in another's?

Zim --- changes?

I found this poor guy at the corner of Sandton Drive and William Nicol and convinced him for a pic. He obliged as long as Idid not capture his face.

I think many of us are now holding our breath and hoping that the deal signed today between Mugabe and Tsvingari will bring peace and stability to the once rich country. As many Zimbabweans I have met along the way remind me... "We will go back, if we get peace and you can have your country again"... the problem is the peace and stability. People do not want to live in fear for their and their families lives.

This is hoping that the new signed deal with a Prime Minister and a President and 2 Dep PM's and 2 Dep Pres' will bring the much needed peace to this beautiful conutry.

So I was surprisingly tagged after ages by Fatima who was absent for a while from the realm. Being Brazen and Prixie started the tag session and I should not complain much as this hasn't happened in a good while.

So the whole thing is on current addictions and this in its self is hard to do…

I mean I still have my past addictions to deal with but here goes:

1. Social Media -- I have mentioned it before so will not repeat myself on this note.

2. Flings and Cream Soda -- this addiction is technically an old one but it resurfaced just before Ramadan started and only my darling Lulu and Sums would understand the need for flings with cream soda. ;)

3. Gadgets -- anything electronic I can lay my hands on regardless of the make which I know saddens Killa.

4. Books -- sadly unlike Fatima, I read everything and anything I can lay my hands on. Can't wait for Christopher Paollini's final book releasing end of this month.

5. Shoes but mainly new tekkies J

I'm sure there are many more addictions but I have to say many are old ones I can't get rid of J

The reason for reposting it here is to make sure that my other readers get a chance to share in the debate.

Welcome to the land of the Gold Coast and the slave traders. Yes Akwaaba means welcome and you certainly are as I mentioned previously in my last post. Here again this is just a quick drop in as I sadly have no time for something longer and more to the liking of my choice.

The reason for being in Accra is to attend and produce three newspapers for the Third High Level Forum for Aid Effectiveness. Basically as Muslims and during this month of Ramadan which is not only a month of fasting but also a month of charity giving, the forum should be of great interest to us. And to us also who spring from the developing world and who have great ties with volunteer and aid programmes.

The forum was to discuss how aid given by donors and donor countries can be best used and aligned in partner/recipient countries to help eradicate poverty. That is the main and general aim. I have my doubts on such forums and conferences as I’m a person who rather see it happening then just to hear all the talking going on.

For a full update on what has been going on check out our paper TerraViva online. We also produced a TerraViva surrounding issues raised by civil society organisations.Hopefully that will give some of you a better idea of the situation and conditions that some of us as volunteers don’t really see or have to deal with.

My concern is that will all this talk is it possible to give aid better?

Also can you do it while being neutral in a situation as you should always be?

The reason I ask this is that as Muslims we are also passionate about these topics, but can we look pass this and help everyone regardless of religion or race or political issue?

Can you honestly say that you would help a Jewish woman and child if they need help? Can you help a Taliban or American if they need the help? Can you do what is best for the person to eradicate poverty while looking pass some of the autrocities that government does? (eg. China and human right violations)

So with those questions I urge you as Muslims in this month to think about who you are as a person and how would you react in a situation that calls you to be a Muslim first and foremost.

I see Christian church leaders and organistions here representing and helping with out thought of religion, ethnicity or race but I see only one, yes ONE muslim organisation. Yes I know its not always about being present but it is indeed always about having a say and being heard. Where are our voices?

In terms of the fasting. Alhamdulliah I seem to only be feeling it for the first time today. And I have now met more and more muslims in Accra then when I first arrived. I was also fortunate enough to be pointed towards a Masjid but sadly it was not a prayer time. Inshallah I will be back here soon to see Ghana in a different way and a different light.

Will give more details on certain events that happened while i was here for this blog post.

Smiles all around

You can find it all anywhere in Accra

Trying to write this in between the hectic schedule I have at the moment in Ghana.

Ghana is definitely not what I expected at all. Neither is Ramadan for me here. I have been so busy working and meeting people that the fact that I am fasting seems to have passed me by. Except the fact that I really really need some sleep.

Other then that it is an amazing experience.

Firstly, we all know that fasting is hard in the first week no matter what we do or say or think. The change in the body obliterates our senses. Hunger pangs, mood swings and the idea that we have to stay at peace with the next person. Sure thing I did not have to fast since I am a traveller, but I chose to and I will live with my decision as being the right choice I made in ages.

Alhamdulillah it has been so far so good and reaching the end of the second day has passed me by. The difficulty though is waking up after only about two to three hours of sleep. Mission is an understatement.

Leaving the airport after two hours waiting for the shuttle to the hotel, I got my first real glimpse of Accra. Accra is what my travelling companion labelled as “typically African”. She insisted that it also had the “African smell which is missing in Cape Town and Johannesburg”. I’m sure she would know more then me as Ghana is only my third African country apart from Madagascar and Egypt (which according to the UN it forms part of the Middle East – if you confused let me know will explain it better).

So Sunday passed by in a whirlwind of work and seeing Accra come to life. And just because its Sunday does not for one minute mean that people are scarce or the roads are quiet. Busy is the way of life here and I love the people. All smiles no matter what. The first thing though that hit me was the poverty. Poverty in the middle of town, outside town just everywhere. Driving into the city we passed areas that would maybe resemble Alexandra township in Johannesburg. (will try and get the pics uploaded soon).

Driving back to the hotel I heard the Azaan. I was a little surprised as it was eminating from the middle of no where – in other words no minarets present for me to identify where the masjid was. This was the call for Esha and the first Taraweeh of the month. I wished right at that moment I could get off the shuttle and hunt the masjid down. But seeing as it was my first night I decided against it.

Instead I got back to the hotel and made sure I ordered food that would be good enough to keep for sehri the next morning. Getting up for sehri is hard in a different country and its harder when you alone with out your room-mates or family but I some how dragged myself out of bed.

Iftar was not that different actually. I sat on the stairs outside the forum hall watched the sunset and waited for my alarm to go off so I knew it was time. Unfortunately where the conference and forums are being held its in central town and no masjid is close by to hear azaan.

So far the days go on…

Will explain more about what I am doing here in the next post hopefully.

Bumbling Monarchs...

Trying to write something of substance for my blog is like shooting in the dark -- a needle in a haystack but that’s me. I write when and where I want to if I want to. Normally it would never be a problem but these days there is so much that I want to write but I can't get around to doing so or finding the time to even contemplate doing it.

I thought that I would finally get some me time to fiddle around and expand my horizons since starting my new job, but none of that has been possible. I was first thrown in the deep end to cover the Southern Africa Development Community summit, which included meeting some presidents and writing a story on something I did not know about but I should have, since it affected women in southern Africa. The Gender Protocol was signed that weekend but it was barely mentioned in any of the papers or televised programmes. And meeting new people. Loads of new people and finding out that one of them has ulterior motives to knowing me. Learning to give that person a cold shoulder and learning that I need to invest in a fake wedding ring. Yah all that in four days. Totally interesting if not the most profound experience.

Now I'm being shipped off to Ghana and I can't wait for the experience, but o boy do I have lots to catch up on. When I was first told that I was going it was to be in the capacity of a spear writer in case it was needed. Now I have started two articles for the forum --- it’s the 3^rd High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness --- and I know there should be about three more to write. All this while trying to keep my first week of fast for Ramadhaan is sure going to be interesting in the least.

I love different countries and places and I hope I can fit in some touring. If not I will have to be satisfied with meeting tons of new people as per usual. Makes me wonder what else will get thrown my way when I get back.

I know I have few heady plans in the pipeline after Ramadhaan. Eid is going to be as crazy as ever. Mid-week taking leave and going home is going to be crazy and then coming back and having to work that Friday.

On to something a bit distant and arb. At the SADC summit a fellow journalist and myself were disgusted with the behaviour of a few colleagues' from Swaziland. As many of you know Swaziland is a country ruled by a monarch. So as journalists you oppose rulers who feel it is their right to control the media and its people, especially one such as the Swazi Monarch. Fine we understand if you work for the media controlled papers, radio station and television studios. We understand you are made to follow rules and regulations. But when you stand and praise your monarch in loud voices instead of doing your job as you should, you earn the disrespect of your fellow journalists.

Asking them why they did that was like insinuating that we knew better. No we don't. We are also humans and we also make the same faults but what they did was outrageous and unprecedented. I had never before experienced something to that effect and I hope never will I.

I am not saying that what I do is right but to stand and holler while your own camera is rolling footage makes you wonder if not everything is just an act.

Hello...and Goodbye...

In the last month so much has come and gone. Yes to all my readers who I have neglected I am sorry.

It’s been a hectic month of running after stories, job hunting, interview pressure and excitement at being offered a job I would not have thought I was the best candidate for.

I have been offered the job of junior journalist at Inter Press Service Africa [www.ipsnews.net]. This is indeed a step up from being the Mail & Guardian intern but the one thing I have to say is that being an intern at the M&G is not like being an intern anywhere else.

Your job description on paper may say intern but in reality you one of the journalists working at the M&G. You are treated no differently and are expected to produce good, quality material at all times or when ever asked of you. I have learnt to write under pressure or relaxed. I have written hard breaking news and features. I have done stories of human interest, global issues, technology and economic issues. I wrote on subjects I had no idea about and through this have learnt a whole lot more.

I am ever grateful to the team at M&G who have nurtured me through the last year. The ones who put their trust in a very fresh young journalist who still needed to learn the ropes. The friendships I have forged with the team I will eternally hold on to.

Now on to the wide world. IPS will be amazing and challenging to work for and honestly … I’m thrilled at the prospect. With IPS there is also the opportunity of international recognition and the hope of travel.

I have the travel bug real bad and this may help that a little. Being based in the Africa office though that will be limited to stories in Africa but I don’t mind. I can honestly not wait.

Hopefully I don’t fall flat on my face though…but come what may I really look forward to it.

This last month has also seen other developments. I have become attached to my social mediums and have learnt that people I thought I knew are not the ones I really know. I have learnt that sometimes your friends are the ones you least expect. A few past friends have now renewed their friendships with me…makes me wonder why they stopped in the first place and I question their motives now but I gladly open my arms to them as we all have been through to much together not to. But I’m glad for these life lessons.

I’m so going to miss everyone here at M&G…

So the Spanish finally did it after a 44 year drought. I have to say though that they did definitely outplay the Germans though there were times of German brilliance and attack that left me wondering if the Spanish could keep there one goal score line in tack. I watched the final with Killa and I know it was hard on him to see his team go out like that. to read his full match report check it out on Swoosh0018. Though he will kill me for blogging this I had to share my excitement.

All in all i'm hoping that this some what young Spanish side will live to their full potential and grace us with their presence in 2010.

Searching the constellation...

Been doing a little soul searching lately and came to the realisation I didn’t want to search my soul. The more I think and try to look for answers the more I loose myself. So what may come will come. I have made this decision before on numerous occasions but hopelessly I must admit never kept to it much. I fight with things that come my way and don’t let the inevitable happen as it should. But I guess that is my nature and that is what I have learnt in the past few years.

Though I wonder if there is a way I could have learnt things better. Or some times learnt the real lesson that needed to be learnt and not the other which is really meaningless to my existence.

Does life ever change?

The best thing some one said/sent to me in the last few days was:

“It's all a learning process. The day you stop learning is the day you start becoming irrelevant ;-)”

I guess then that come what may I most probably may or may not repeat the same mistakes over and over again and the day I start realising that I have learnt the wrong thing from that mistake and that’s the reason I keep repeating the mistake is the day I learn more then I had before.

(That some how made complete sense in my head!!!)

Thank you to the dude who gave me the most gorgeous bunch of flowers this past weekend. Will post a pic soon. And they are my favourite flowers. Thanks for brightening up my mood everyday I come home and see them.

Right now to the more important thing…

EURO 2008

I’m loving the ball that’s been played in the tournament so far. With the surprises and the quality on display its no wonder that the Euro’s have is the next most watched event after the Football World Cup. And may over take that in a few years (or even this year – we will await the figures after the tournament).

Turkey last night from the little we were able to watch was sublime and all credits to Germany who were able to contain the continuous onslaught to come out victorious. This I must remind you were a second string Turkish side as most were out through suspension or injury. Turkey you do your country proud.

The semi tonight is going to be just as spectacular. My friends keep reminding me not to forget the Guus Curse – the ability by Guus Hiddink to take the minnows of every tournament to the semi-finals. And boy can Russia produce some upsets. Spain may have beaten them in the round robins but this is a changed Russian team. They playing the type of football we use to seeing from countries like Italy and France who are not in the semi-finals this time around. I for one will not underestimate them or their talent.

Next point:

Been doing some amazing stories lately and loving the thrill of deadlines. Though I’m in the market for a new job I’ve also found two other passions and have been pursing that a bit as of late.

Maybe its something that will ultimately just be more of a nothing then a something but I’m learning that I still have the ability to learn – and who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Lol

The first passion I’m sure people have caught on already… I’m becoming a bit of a social medium whore – and I love it.

You guys can find me on Twitter, Plurk, Facebook, Friendfeeder, and a few others I will not divulge as yet. I’m loving the interaction and sociability that I’m finding through these different platforms. The people I meet also have imparted more valuable knowledge then they realise. I’ve learnt more about my blog and how to blog and about sites and arb information I’m sure most of my immediate friends would never know or would not even care about. I’ve also made the most amazing friends through these mediums and for me that’s a total added bonus.

My other passion is something though I will keep as my secret for now…

But keep your ears open to the sounds of the underground ;)

Erratic state of affairs

My posts of late have been somewhat haphazard and erratic, but that is generally the state of my thoughts as well so it would only be natural. On another deviant post I’d just like to say thanks to all the wonderfully people who responded to my cry for help at the camps.

New developments suggest that these camps will be moved to permanent premises in the Midrand area but this does not mean they still don’t need your help. I’m also glad to know that people have taken the initiative from the start to help. Stories we have been covering do not anywhere close enough cover all the stories of love and warmth expressed by people we meet along the way.

Some don’t even want their stories retold but I pray to God to keep them safe. They are definitely angels. Along with a few other stories I nearly jumped on a bus to Harare till they started arresting journalists again and sentencing them to 6months in prison.

Surprising how this goes under the radar with most people and to think a few months ago we were calling everyone to fight for the release of the British journo. Now South African journo’s are in jail and been sentenced and no one seems to care or give a damn. Something seems very wrong with that picture…don’t you think?!?!?!

When someone has answers to BOBs madness please let me know.

So Obama is now the leading presidential candidate for the Democratics… this makes me think of what I previously wrote on the topic of the US presidential race.

Interestingly the US presidential hopefuls are in the midst of their elections. The focus greatly on the two Democrat candidates – Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Is this a suggestion that the tide has changed so much so that people want a Democrat even if they maybe black or a woman. (Is the US ready for such a change?) The republican hopefuls are also having their very same elections but all you see in the media are the Democrat hopefuls..

The policy decisions made by any future president of the most powerful nation in the world will undoubtedly play a major part in the rest of the world – are we, the world, ready to be ruled by a black man or a white woman?

Things have not changed much from the last time that was written. I’m scared to know what will happen when the proper election run begins. Seriously though I was all for Obama winning but now I’m unsure about that. As the race goes on what he stood for seems to have changed a little, but then again I have no deep understanding of US politics so who am I to say anything?

If he does become the next US president then I will see what he is really made of. His comments about “We must be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in” and “This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past.”, gives me some hope.

In another post I also went through the turmoil within my head on the whole job situation. Nothing much has changed on that front except the parents have declared that I should apply for everything that comes my way and “you never know something will happen”. Now if anyone has a good motivation letter to pass my way and a few tips please do so.

It will be greatly highly appreciated!!!!

Confusion...

I'm not sure how exactly to start this post. Maybe a little advertising and marketing may be the key here. Here goes:

A very talented person who has been trained in the media field is looking for a future job. This individual will soon be at odds with the position she currently fills. She (yes, she it falls under the BEE policy) has come to the cross roads of her life once again. Apply to remain in the place that has trained her well in the last year or to broaden her horizon and see what the future may hold. Anyone knowing of anything in her areas of expertise please contact her. Thanks

Yah so I’m back at the cross roads of my existence and unfortunately unsure of what decision would be the right one. Hopefully the next week will open my eyes to what would be the best for me but ultimately I need to grow up and make a decision that would be in my best interest.

The positions that are available seem to be out of my depth but then again what is my depth? That question has been bugging me. What if it’s in fact perfect for me and my career and I’m just being stupid by bringing myself down. What I do know though is that these options are short on the things i love doing.

Reporting breaking news, and having time to write features, technology and gadgets as well as the internet is a passion. Social media is also my addiction but these positions are short on those aspects, which mean that I may be lost to the future of the growth of social media in South Africa. Something that I have a passion for, though I may not know the nitty grittys of it.

I love the work I do. The last two weeks showed me why I love it that much, and hate it at times as well. But that is only natural. A love – hate relationship is what most jobs are based on I guess. But discontent was never part of the jobs that I do.

Maybe I’m analysing this too deeply and I should just take what comes my way.

On another note I would love to thank my friends who came together to give what little and to help those who needed it more then ourselves. To those who pitched in and help put the cutest smiles on kids faces – a BIG BIG BIG thank you.

Xenophobia in SA --- Help change the situation!!!

Blind Zimbabweans at Jeppe Street Police Station

These last two weeks have been the most argonising one that I have experienced in ages. I turned to journalism for the reason that presented itself in the last week. Xenophobic attacks, displaced people, pure utter thugery all in my own back yard. I would never have thought it possible. I honestly thought one day I would be travelling to OTHER African countries to cover stories like this.

Now I get to cover it without stepping off my door step…

Makes you wonder --- doesn’t it?

These same people who think its okay to beat up innocent people need to take a look at what they really trying to achieve with their nonsense.

I mean – do people know that this has been the first necklacing (where pple are burnt to death by a tire round their neck) since Apartheid – almost 20 years ago!!!!!

Has South Africa lost its soul?

There are many reasons as to why this seems to be happening and even though it may have started as Xenophobia its honestly changed to something worse -- feels amazingly evil. When have you ever seen Johannesburg city dead at night???Never!!! But its become like a ghost town of late. Mobs of youngsters inciting violence and also just looting for the fun and sake of it. That to me is definitely not Xenophobia.

I went to the refugee camps and I was brought to tears to see young children who have been born and schooled in South Africa asking “Why is this happening?” with the heaviest South African accent I have heard. Innocents with the only fault that their parents are not from South Africa. “Can you brings us chocolates and biscuits and colouring books when you come again?”

That’s all they ask for even though they are now living with out a roof over their heads!!!! In make shift tents in the grounds of Jeppe Police Station they stay with their mothers and other children, while their fathers or older male siblings stay in the cold under the night stars.

Huddled together for warmth I find a group of Zimbabwean blind people who are in dire need, as what ever blankets that were distributed they were forgotten about in the ensuing stampede. They are blind they cannot reach the people handing blankets out -- they are the forgotten!!! When do we ever turn on the disabled????? I read a letter written by them to the South African people --- do you know what they say --- They THANK us for allowing them to beg to gain a little money!!!! They Thank us!??!?!?!?!? Do we not get it?!??!?!?

There’s a group of people dancing and singing praising the Lord… they don’t do it because they happy, they do it because they hope something better comes from it…they do it so that they can find a way to stay warm…they do it because there is nothing else they can do while they wait for help.

Given only four slices of bread for the day these people are starving, destitute and with the weather conditions the way they are at present most likely to freeze to death.

Football...Eskom...and Love Shedding...

No this is not a post on the Euro 2008 though I am looking forward to it but the picture has some meaning below...

People say that to blog you need to do it more regularly and on a continuous basis. But some people forget that not everyone is privileged enough to have access 24/7.
Why this train of thought...well if I had the access i would be religiously publishing everything that happens in my life all the time and for that matter voicing my opinions more on the fact that I have an opinion.

But back to the reason of this ‘outdated’ blog. I have so much anger and frustration pent up in me that I have decided to do something physical. Yes I have taken up football. Now as most of my guy friends would know…I can kick the ball, I can pass the ball, I can foul a player, but I CANNOT for one sec run with the damn ball. God alone knows why so many years down the line I finally decide to take up the one sport I have the biggest passion for.

I’m not ashamed though I don’t think I would ever want my ‘guy’ friends to come see me play (well until I become more confident in my atrocious skills). But damn since I can no longer swim in Johannesburg due to the falling temperatures I sure need an outlet for my energy.

O which reminds me the damn Eskom and their tariff hikes as well as the fact I don’t experience load shedding does not mean they have let us (my house and those on our road) off easy. We suffered two power surges which has left us without a television and microwave (though the micro has been fixed now) and no cellphone chargers as well. The idiots forget we rely on these basics. Let me explain…for the week in which the micro and lights went we were resigned to having to warm up small amounts of food in the oven which uses more electricity ---stupid stupid Eskom and City Power. The next surge left us without a television.

Yes we still have no television but thanks to Joe I have series and movies to watch, which helps but every time I want to watch sports I need to find somewhere else to do so. (Anyone with a spare tv to lend me???) Generally this would not be an issue, since I have been catching UEFA Champs league with the guys from the Swoosh blog but when I want to check the home grown football (which is really exciting this season seeing as the top three are not the high flyers and the title race is wide open) I cannot :P fooey. Eskom makes my blood boil but when we lodged the complaint we were surprisingly notified that the reason was some idiots had cut the wires and stolen the copper cable. Eish and the situation just seems to get worse by the day.

Some facts…

Eskom doesn’t ‘foresee’ the future and the government doesn’t build new power stations.
Eskom decides the only way to help the current situation is to Load Shed.
Eskom then realises to do even more a ‘necessary price’ hike is required to fund the building of a new power station and to buy power from other countries like Mozambique.
Poor people feel the pinch in their pockets and start protesting against immediate hikes.
Some idiot trying to get a little money to feed family (I’m assuming he is doing this for good reasons and no other) steals the copper cables so that he can resell them and the chances that Eskom ends up buying them back is great (I did an interview so its likely).

Now all this combined with the fact that we need power to live our lives – our everyday lives – leaves us all a little hot under the collar. O wait did I forget to say that its OUR fault we short on power and because WE don’t help by turning off appliances WE will be living with this situation for a good couple of years.

Another thing which seems to be a bit of a bother is the annoying fact that I’m single and okay with it. People have this idea that I should have someone and guys should be lining up but in truth they are not and I am comfortable with the fact. I think the only real problem is the occasional longing one may have but that is natural especially after coming out from a long intensive relationship. (Yah I know you cynics its been over a year but fooey I like being single right now!!)

I long and wish for better things but I’m only human (and a woman amazingly) so its natural but it does not mean that the next person who comes along I will fling myself at them. To me right now that’s no more important. I want to just follow my dreams to see were life takes me.

No I am NOT saying I will not get married, what I am saying is the urgency that may have been there 2 years ago no longer exists. Neither am I saying I will not meet people because for my parents sake I should (since I aint getting any younger) but it still means that there is no rush. When it comes and it’s meant to happen it will and I will stick by that philosophy through and through.

Oi Dude – yes you – I know you reading this --- I am not Scaring you away --- don’t runaway now – stay don’t go and you never know there still maybe hope…

FBJ vs 702 vs Racism vs....????

NOT SURE WHAT THE FIGHT IS ABOUT ANYMORE....

Sitting in the forum held by the South African Human Rights Council (HRC) regarding recent issues on the Forum of Black Journalist (FBJ) and their subsequent fight with Talk Radio 702, I wondered whether anyone really understood the matter at hand.

The fighting between the two over spilled into a right on attack at each others character. Punches thrown (figuratively), blood shed and in the end no sign of the matter at hand.

Sure 702 had a right to file a complaint at the racial exclusionary manner of the FBJ and sure the FBJ had in return every right to have their voices heard, but the slander on character I really could not understand.

I for one am all for the FBJ. Yes go have a forum for black journalist’s, yes go do good, but yes (damn it) OPEN your doors to whoever wants to attend so that you can all work together to improve the stature of black journalist’s. The FBJ’s exclusionary policy is ineffective and maybe more detrimental to the upliftment of black journalists in the long run.

I’m a young journalist and the slinging match did nothing but make me feel as if I was let down. My idea that unity helps to bridge what has happened in the past seems to be a false utopian hope. I sat there in bewilderment watching people I felt and believed so strongly in making me want to be a journalist; degrade each other that I wondered if I had in deed chosen the right profession.

Journalism for me is to report on the truth and to have voice for those who do not have one. Also to act as the fourth estate. (right?!?!?!?)

But when you here that a certain group of media powerful had a closed meeting with one of the most powerful and influential people in SA, the African National Congress President Jacob Zuma, it makes me wonder if there in fact was an ulterior motive. Sure nothing may have been said or done but the fact that the FBJ excluded others from such a luncheon will make any conspiracy theorist wonder what the TRUTH is.

Anyway now that the ball is in the HRC’s court (so to speak) we will see what happens.

Frustration

Another long delay before time was given to writing this piece…

There have been various things happening over the last two months. We had Polokwane, Eid, Xmas and New Years. I had my holidays in between and boy was life eventful.

The usual mad rush at the end of the year is expected but throw in the curve ball of the ANC elections and they sure up the tempo. So Jacob Zuma is ANC president and he has been sentenced to a trail by the media till his court appearance in August, I’m sure all of this was as expected. Whether he is guilty, or not or even guilty by association we should honestly leave it to an unbiased court to decide. The ongoing media reports are sure influencing the majority of people in the country and the question will be how to we live with the situation if he is in fact not guilty? The way things are going in most of our heads we have already found him guilty…I wonder what the outcome of the court case will be.

Zuma may have his faults and may or may not be guilty of the fiasco of the arms deal but trying him before the public (through the media) even before his actual court date would be wrong on any part, especially by South Africans who seemingly believe in the justice system. If we wish to have any faith in the justice system we should leave it to them and investigators and judges and lawyers to play their part in the final act.

On another note has anyone any idea on what the actual policies discussed at the conference are and what part do they play in our future? These same policies will be the most important things we look at the next time we go to ‘make our mark’ in the national elections (in 2009). Most of us have no idea what was in fact discussed. The focus was mainly on the presidential race and now on Zuma and his problems. Personally I for one would like to know what economic stance the ANC will be following as well as what social developments and attitude to health will be.

Interestingly the US presidential hopefuls are in the midst of their elections. The focus greatly on the two Democrat candidates – Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Is this a suggestion that the tide has changed so much so that people want a Democrat even if they maybe black or a woman. (Is the US ready for such a change?) The republican hopefuls are also having their very same elections but all you see in the media are the Democrat hopefuls. Interestingly the same close race between the Democrats can be reflected in the republican elections, except they both men and white – one a pastor, the other an out of favour senator.

The policy decisions made by any future president of the most powerful nation in the world will undoubtedly play a major part in the rest of the world – are we, the world, ready to be ruled by a black man or a white woman?

In other news – yes I feel like reporting – it was good going home to the family for an extra long holiday. Eid was as amazing as ever. Slaughtering is an experience that always leaves me on another spiritual level. Sublime may be the word I’m looking for and no that does not make me want to see more blood, just the whole getting involved and knowing why you partaking -- is the ultimate.

Going home was the thing I needed the most. Jhb has left me feeling out of sorts and not me at all. The beach is what was needed with a good few days spent there lying in the sun and getting burnt (yes I’m Indian but I enjoy the heat and sun). The home fires were the usual as well…what with the usual sibling arguments and the parental conflicts (yes with me involved) nothing seemed to have changed – except me. Wonder if Jhb has finally caught up with me.

The feeling of being in limbo was a massive shock. Not knowing in which direction I was heading in Durban and being back in Jhb doesn’t seem to make a difference. Work keeps me busy but the lack of motivation or a reason is scary.

Mmmm maybe I just need to take life by the hand and lead it unto sunset…

The super-ficial and not so super

Yesterday seemed to be another passing day the only significance to it was the fact that I some how managed to turn a year older. But as my friends say I never grow up. I wonder…is it possible to get older but stay young?
This train of thought naturally leads me to one of my all time favourite books…Peter Pan, the boy who never wanted to grow up. Sounds a bit like me but the whole move to Johannesburg has changed that. I’ve grown in leaps and bounds and have found out the hard way that I really cannot tolerate most women (or rather I cannot tolerate them while I live with them).
The freedom also has gotten to me but I miss home enough to be excited with the prospect of leaving and driving 600km on my own just to see home again.

Anyway on a different note…you know we always ask ourselves what models really get up to… well moi had the pleasure of some how being chosen to do a little short photo-shoot session (along with a few others from M&G) for our advertising and marketing feature on the M&G Cabinet Report Card. I set out with three other women from M&G and I will tell you that they are gorgeous people. Anyway we head off to the photo-shoot and surprise surprise I feel like I’m finally in the wrong profession.

I mean in which office can you conduct a photo-shoot and find the kitchen lady cooking for you all at once. Wait not a kitchen lady but a COOK!!! Anyway back to the point…

Stand there…look at me…turn your face to the left but look at me…now turn it to the right and still look at me…tilt your chin up…higher…give me attitude…wait a moment…there better…nice…move the board a little down on the left…good…okay that’s it!!!

And it was all over as fast as it began…so really how hard can it be being a model?

Well from the few friends I know who do it as a living it is harder then the simple shoot I visited on this day, but maybe this little shoot will make me famous lol (I doubt it – all they wanted was my chubby cheeks *giggles*). The whole trying to give what the public want to meet instant gratification is definitely an ugly business. The modelling world is no different but this is one area I will not foray into in the near future.

On a different note…we are heading to Polokwane, to see in the new President of the African National Congress and most probably the new president of South Africa. No matter what our opinions maybe with regards to the two distinctive candidates…I think many of us are forgetting about the other issues.

What about the ANC’s future plans, those that the new president will implement. How will they look to govern the future and the lands and people in it? Will they take a new stance on the policy of HIV/AIDS in South Africa or will we still be lead down the road less trodden? Will the economic inflation and interest rate hikes continue? Will women get equal opportunity or not?

Theses are the ultimate questions we should be asking but we seem so caught up in the one of who will rule that we have left these on the wayside. Sure the new president would be the influential power but he will not be going at it alone. These few questions come from a bigger pot that needs asking and these questions will ultimately then decide who will be the ruler of South Africa come the next elections.

Words...Pictures...

Anyone who has read my posts will know that I have a mad obsession with words and pictures (yes admit it I will). But this same obsession has finally gotten me into trouble of sorts...or rather a miscommunication and mis-understanding. Not something that I would have thought would be my doing. Yet it was and a lot of talking was needed to resolve the matter.

O where is my head I have not mentioned the conflict that my love for words has put me in. the little incident revolves around the status message space on Gtlk. My love for words has mad this place an exciting view into my arb insights. They range from quotes to words I've read somewhere and loved as well as binary coding -- guys you should check out this site that converts anything you want into binary, way easier then doing it yourself like back in school.
So I placed a few words there that some person had written and it was not a famous person so googling the words were of no use. A friend reads it and well then there is that little break down in communication and understanding. It was blown out of context and well made me wonder if people in fact saw me as a fragile individual who needed to be looked after and who constantly throws mixed signals to her friends? Hmmmm maybe I am in need of looking after but I seriously would never send mix signals unless I have no idea that I am.

The whole idea of what we write not necessarily being your own work seems to slip by people and then again what we do in life echoes in our words and pictures and who we are...what a mish mash of different communications skills can do to you. Must make it difficult for a president/spokesperson. They would constantly have to watch what they say, write and do...very similar to a celebrity in ways then as well.

Now that I have learnt my lesson in future I maybe a bit more reserved in what i just copy into my status message.

Blogging on another level

So I haven’t blogged in ages…and no blog critic and gang hasn’t scared me away. I’ve just been busy with relocations and a new job lol

This post in itself is a bit of self proclamation. Mmmm maybe more like self ‘egolation’ (yes a new made up word :P). So people are finally talking about blogging in SA, I mean what with the annoying Stork advert (I think rah dished the dirt out on that one) and the new era of Facebook why am I reposting my article here?

Well while I was doing it I found it incredibly amazing that the actual number of bloggers in SA can’t be measured. Vincent (mentioned in the article) suggests that every SA blogger should atleast register with Amatomu so that in future Goldstuck and gang can get more precise and accurate figures of bloggers in SA.

So I’m guessing you asking what this has got to do with us mere bloggers who write absolute ‘shit’ and who aimlessly talk about life - well the more the media market know who we are the more we can benefit from it. Not only are advertisers after our money we can in fact make money from advertisers. The whole concept of Web2.0 (I learnt about this only recently) makes the internet an open source platform to use and share alike.

Mak (sorry mak i couldn't find your actual post plz send link so i can change it no time compromises a comprehensive search :)) has spoken about piracy in his blog posts before, well now with Web 2.0 and the blogging and Facebooking and YouTube platforms there’s going to be more and more of it. The media is changing its focus and now making it easier to obtain items through the web so I’m sure at the end of it all we won’t be charged with piracy. :D.

SA blogs on the rise

Something is stirring in the South African blogosphere. This year will probably be remembered as a time when blogs came of age, with more than 600 000 internet users visiting blogs by their fellow South Africans in just one month. Electronic-media analyst Arthur Goldstuck has provided the online world with relevant South African statistics on the number of bloggers in South Africa for the month of August 2007.

In a blog entry posted this week on the Mail & Guardian Online's Thought Leader, Goldstuck says he believes that by August next year, "blogs will not only be a mainstream component of most online media in South Africa, but they will also be a dominant component".

"In terms of social media and networking spaces, the shift in numbers has increased greatly. Facebook, which has had a three-fold increase in the past three months, is the symptom of the tipping point," he told the M&G Online on Thursday.

Goldstuck -- who heads the World Wide Worx research organisation and regularly provides insights and IT trend analyses to businesses and governments in Africa -- said the number of South African bloggers in relation to the number of web users in the country is still low, but it is, in fact, an astonishing achievement.

One indicator of the growth of blogs is the rise of local blog aggregators -- that is, guides to what is being read by others. Examples are Afrigator, the continent's first blog aggregator; and the recently launched Amatomu, the first comprehensive tracking service for blogs and bloggers in South Africa. Goldstuck's statistics show there were 25 037 blogs in South Africa at the end of August, though only 11% were active.

According to Vincent Maher, the M&G Online's strategist, the number of unique blog visitors during August, 621 204, would place blogs overall among South Africa's five most popular websites. This number, said Maher, lends credibility to the way the internet and its use is moving forward: it promotes collaboration between and sharing among users.

Goldstuck's information was sourced from South Africa's various blogging platforms, and he "interrogated" blogging services to ensure he could publish a true reflection of blogging in the country. Previously, educated guesses had been the order of the day. Some of these proved to be fairly accurate, despite the methodology being a few steps removed from augury.

Looking ahead, he sees more blogging growth in the next few months "and then it will level off".

"By the end of the year we should see the number of [South African] internet users increase to 3,85-million, and broadband subscriptions will increase by 828 000. This will bring greater media attention until such time blogging will find its natural niche," he said.

Loss

What does it mean to loose some one????
I've experienced loss on many levels. But the finality of loss is even harder to bear. The ultimate type of loss to me is that of death. And some how everyone i know has experienced it one way or the other.

So whats the whole point of this...well my helplessness is the point.
My non-worthiness (another made up word i know) and my uselessness at not being able to find the right words and to make it all okay. A dear friend loses someone who means the world to them and i can't find the words to make it all okay. Utter helplessness i guess is what i feel. I wish i could give the said friend a huge hug and hold friend close and say it'll be okay but i would be lying...its not okay to lose it hurts like hell and years down the line it'll still hurt. the most i guess i can do is to let said friend know that they not alone and that their friends are there if they ever need to talk or to be held...a hug goes along way (o so i think)...but then again who am i to think????

I only have lost a few times and the one that i still feel the most about happened almost a decade ago. To think 1992 seems like yesterday to me *sigh*... proves the point that loss always remains within you and the pain you felt then you'll feel a million yrs on...

the most i can tell you dear friend is that you and your family are in my duas and so is every other person who has lost and who i know...

i find solace in my friends and i hope said friend will find solace in us....

So this is a cry out for help...
I've never packed like this before i have no idea where to start...i'm going crazy becuase i don't feel like starting lol....
Peoples please help....
Yah I'm a first timer in this sense, the most i've ever packed was the usual overseas trips and stuf but those meant i was coming home even if it was after a month...this is so new too me i'm supposed to pack for a year (yes i know things can be sent to me after but if you know me you'll also know i want stuf now and now lol no waiting for it)...the most i have packed is mmmm ZILCH!!!!
HELP!!!!!!!!

oooo i'm going car shopping tomorrow doesnt that feel wierd lol
car shopping like i'm going to the supermarket....mmmm can i hav a bit of gear lock and sum power steering and a blast of aircon....oooo dnt forget the radio on the side....:P

So i have been neglecting the blog a bit (according to some people) but honestly i haven't.
I just wanted the previous post to fester a bit :D

O well let me write...
Do you get those moments in life when its so peaceful and perfect...those moments when you alone and its only you and your thoughts??? I'm not talking about the period before you sleep but rather of the times when you awake...
Do you Get them????
Well i was lucky to have to such purrfect moments this last weekend...wel seriously just two such moments...and they were both in an aeroplane :D

Moments like those you just want to take out your pen and remember it all...but i couldn't... i let a perfect moment pass me by and i had no regrets about it.

When i should have been abale to write and express everything that sends me over the edge...i decided not to...My thoughts are my minds eyes...

Anyway on a different note...

I flew to Johannesburg this last weekend for an interview (i think my new employers are reading this :) but i still gotta write what i want too). The interview was awesome...though i felt out of depth for a bit, and maybe i came across as over chatty and a know it all...but honestly I'm not i have to keep learning and experiencing. I guess thats the main reason i wanted this job so badly. I want the challenge!!!
I honestly don't want to move to Jhb but if i have to i have to and this oppurtunity is too good to pass up...i'm lucky and fortunate to get it so i'm gonna grab it with all i have and hopefully learn more then i ever did at campus. (Campus lies when they say they preparing you for the future...its all a hoax i tell ya!!!!)

So guess whose the new junior at Mail and Guardian.....*Zah grins from ear to ear* :D

I promise all my friends to see them before i leav glorious Durban...but till then i am madly busy...still gotta giv in resignation letter...find accomodation...get me some wheels...and try and find my footing....

Ramblings on a Miniscule scale…

You must be wondering as to why the minuscule statement …well if I was allowed to really ramble on about the issues that seem to be flying through my head we would be into a really rally long series…hmmm maybe as long as LOTR which in all honesty is a pretty long awesome book (and yes I regard all 3 as a book because that is how they were originally written before being cut down into parts by Tolkien and Chris)…

So first order of business…something I’ve been trying to get my head around and couldn’t since Saturday…yes it’s taken me almost a week to write about it but hey I writing it NOW…
Last week (in SA and across the world) was a week in Solidarity with the People of Palestine. So what has this got to do with Saturday? Well I need to vent the fact that I felt disheartened and angry at people in SA, especially those in Durban. Why why why?????

For starters these same people swear that they will fight the fight The Jihad against the Zionist Jews. They will give up house and home and family to go to Palestine and fight, yet they could not take a few hours from their day on Saturday to attend a rally that was held across the glove to show that they stand in solidarity with the people in Palestine and those displaced from the country through the ongoing fighting and forced removals. The same people who say they ‘fought’ against the Apartheid government so that we (the next generation) could live in a democratic country. These very same people, who also say they fight for freedom of all people, could not spend a few hours at a rally…shame on us shame on us shame on us….the people of SA. This utter disappointment is not aimed at the Muslims in SA only but at the hundreds and thousands of South Africans who believe in our freedom and the freedom of everyone. But in all honesty my anger was leveled at the MUSLIM DURBANITES….the Muslim community on Saturday made me want to strangle their pretty necks…What laughing stocks we must be to the Zionists, the Israelis and the International world… I swear at time like these I wish I was a Capetonian…10 000 people showed up to pledge their support…and Jhb also had almost 5 000 people…Durban sigh I will not comment on. I was there covering the event as a journalist. I wish I wasn’t there in that capacity…why? Well I need my anger to be voiced and I couldn’t. I was there to do a job and a job I had to do…I will def say that even though the ANC were there to conduct their own meetings they spared a few moments to remind us that….”there are three kinds of evil in this world…the first is the evil of the oppressor […] the second is the evil of being a watcher [ …] and the third evil is that of not doing anything to stop the first two evils…” – Sbu Ndebele (Premier of KZN) [urr sorry can’t remember exact exact words will watch the tape again and make adjustments accordingly]

So what form of evil are the Muslim people of Durban? (*sarcasm insinuated here*)

So on to my next issue…the civil servants strike…to all those who are complaining about it you guys should really start looking at what kind of people you really are…

Why? Lol

As many of you have noted SA doesn’t seem to be functioning in the ‘correct way’. What do I mean by that…well over the last few days I’ve heard various complaints about how they should all get back to work people are dying people are stranded things seem to be messed up right?

Duh definitely!!!! If our government and all the complainers can’t see what a beneficial asset these civil servants are in our lives you sure are noticing now. Yes people are dying at hospitals…but people are dying all the time in SA due to AIDS, poverty, health and crime etc. No I’m not being evil I’m trying to get the point across that these people work everyday of their lives in horrid conditions and they serve ‘us’ yes us. They keep our country running smoothly from day to day and they care and tend to patients who can put their lives at risk but they do it because its their ‘job’ and with out them we left as we are now…in a bad place!!!
And how can you turn away from those who have taught you in life…do our teachers not count as our parents our nurturers our second families???? So what many of you have gone to private schools but even then you know how much your teachers are shaping you are caring for you and are providing you with the skills to be ‘PEOPLE’!!!! These teachers are teaching your future presidents and ministers…your doctors and nurses…your businessmen and women…will you not care for their needs? The government has a surplus of wealth within their coffers (according to the last speech by the finance minister Trevor Manual); so should they not at least put part of it to those who teach our leaders?

Maybe at this venture I should leave it be so that people can mull over it but my mind is running on to so many other issues I want to talk about…. But please keep the above more in mind then what I will express below…

I’m a journalist right…so I should be objective in my ideas and writings right? (This is one for MJ we have argued this before but I will rant again here…) so why do I have this notion that no journalist is ever objective…why? Because we already formulated into a model that fits society. We grow up learning certain aspects regarding culture and society and ethics and institutionalized ideologies. Why am I going on about this well for the mere fact that I was reminded that I should be writing in an objective capacity while at the same time being told the paper has certain ‘ideas’ about a certain issue. Yes I know the political economy of the media is a big player in all of this ( I mean that was my fortay of study – I tutored and did honors in it) but it still leaves me very disillusioned about the whole idea of the media and whether objective reporting is a utopian ideology conceived by theorists who wished to push their own agenda (yes people figure that one out…I’m sure one of you clever nuts could J).

Another arb point in these ramblings is the need to express what power memories have in a persons life…yes very different from my above mentioned rambles, but also very relevant in any sense one may wish to perceive it. So I’ve been tripping down memory lane again and its been a wild trip. And I don’t mind doing it OCCASIONALLY. Been missing some lost friends and wondering whether there’s ever a right time for anything and whether having regrets now makes a difference. L me wonders if I will ever be able to get a chance to make things right with those I have wronged or I feel I have wronged…its hard I guess more when some of them are no longer with us in this world, but it also made me realized that I can do something about those who still are around. I can make it right with them! So I have set out making things right I hope though some people well I can’t seem to get through to on any level but atleast I know I’ve tried and I feel better about doing so. Also been tripping over good memories…the kind that makes you all warm and fuzzy inside wishing you could have them back. Memories have a certain power all of their own…they either make you cry, sad, happy, warm, fuzzy or neurotic. I like my memories I like that I can share things with so many people that others may never know about. “our little secrets” ( a song comes to mind lol)…anyway enough with all this…I’m out to make more memories and all my friends are invited :D

So my ramblings have some what come to the end…I told you before if I go on it will never stop…so I should stop here now before I kill thee of boredom…and no this is not my return just yet…this is my infintismal need to put words in a pot and stew them around…hopefully leading to the fulfillment of a master piece….go figure!!!

Please indulge me in the rare occasion of a girly Rant and Rave (R&R). Yes to those who know me this is one of those rare moments but I'm in need of it so either carry on reading to know why....OR STOP....and FCUK OFF!!!

(urr i should be sorry about my vulgarity but I'm not so don't expect apologies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

So i finally like ended up washing my hair in the morning today rather then my usual in the night since its winter and i dnt believ in hair dryers well dats al gud and stuf except that it was bloody cold but the worse part was i finally found the hair dryer untangled the cords
and dryed my hair....

amazingly all this while not running that late for work

the point of this whole R&R is that my god damn hair finally set awesomely after like years and guess who went and put her scarf on after that *sigh*

Yes i should be glad that my holy islamic side is some what coming together...but seriously i'm a girl and the one in a million chance of our hair ever setting the way we want it...is like...asking a guy never to scratch his balls.....

O the other thing i wanted to R&R about is the fact that pple should never ever have open plan offices!!!!
God forbid i drag the next person to irritate me by the hair and chuck him/her out of the 7th floor window

Yoh now i feel better after saying all that!!!!

So this last week and weekend brought on a heavy case of tripping down memory lane…
Not a bad thing most of the time but this week was a revolutionary rollercoaster of ups and downs…

So anyway were was i...yah the fact that i've been on this trip of late is not a bad thing.
I like my memories and i hold on to them maybe some times to fiercly but i guess they are a part of me now. they what ultimately defines the person that i've become, regardles of how people percieve the real me...its def all me!

But i ponder on the issue of friends lost...why do we lose contact with people who mean so much to us? Why do we change our relationships because we have to? Who says i still cant be your friend now that you don't live here any more? Who says because you now have a girlfriend/boyfriend/fiance/husband/wife we have to stop being the friends we were?
My questions may seem a bit arb to some of my readers but may be others can identify with what i'm trying to say.
My tripping made me realise that the way i see life is no more as it used to be. I've become a total scaredy cat eish and thats so not me!!! I'm scared to face the future knowing that i leave behind so much and so many people! Like wtf becuase i'm never scared of anything but i guess what i'm really scared of is letting go.
Yes letting go of what was and what has moved on. Sure the nature of relationships change so shouldn't i be accepting this change and hey not all cange is bad...some are really really good and some maybe needed the change so that i could realise the true friends from the false.

So i have ranted and raved for a bit but its not everything i want to say or wish to say but its okay i'll continue another time...

On to more arb notes and thoughts...YAY AC MILAN and LIVERS in UEFA finals. Makes me wonder if we'l have a repeat of last time (2005-2006 finals) or as i was reminded...some ITALIAN REVENGE...needless to say Juve'85 comes to mind (thanks to the soul who mentioned it to me!).

Another point to arb about...is I'M LOSING MY VOICE *URGH* wtf i never lose my voice my life line my life my means to communicate my saneness my ability to express....

no its not insane...i got curly hair and i like straight hair...a ghdcosts R1500....why must i pay to "burn" my hair and going to the salon costs R100 a week x 52 weeks = 5200.00.....so its not insane .....even if have to go for a function , i don't have to go salon, just wash and go....how convenient....for 365 days ....costs R 3.28/day....a pack of cigarettes costs +/- R19.00...so if acid/arshad buys a pack every 2/3 days= +/- R 3467.50 = 288% insane if i am "insane"....and if they buy a pack a day then they get more insane.....;-))

I’m sitting watching cricket and soccer with my dad, actually we fighting over the remote, but this is not what’s making me write this.
Out of the blue my dad decides to remind me of the fact that I can’t sing. Yes people I can’t hold a note to save my life. He reminds me of a time long gone. When I was small my dad used to tease and taunt (how cruel) me about the fact I couldn’t sing. It used to be so horrid that I used to sit in the corner of our dining room on the window sill and cry and shout that I could sing better then him…Imagine a chubby little child with tears flowing down her cheeks proclaiming to the world she could sing. How incredibly reminiscent I feel right now. I actually long for that time again.

But yes daddy dearest was right I still can’t sing lol never could then never can now…
And why all this well he laughs telling me I listen to too much music but I still can’t sing *sigh*

Rant and Rave (R&R)

Yah this is the kind of R&R i want...
A place where i can release built up frustration, and some how sooth and calm my soul.
So what you may i ask do i wish to R&R about...hmmm lots and at the same time nothing at all! yah exactly i want to R&R about the nothingness part of it all.
I was standing at the bus stop the other day... yes people i wait at the bus stop...and i was just enjoying the moment of solitude. Watched the cars go by and the buses (I was waiting for the mother peole!!!) and wondering how they seemed to pollute the same f%$^ing air I was breathing, but thats not the issue here. The issue is that i was actually enjoying this alone time of people, bus and car and the occasional bike watching. I could see people laughing, talking, fighting and kissing (Bus stop is near a robot sillys) in their cars. How differently we all see the world move by.
The other totally soothing thing about watching all this was that it began to drizzle. Me i love the rain (I LOVE H2O). Was desperatly wanting to play in the rain. Can you imagine me running between cars lol how much fun would that be...except on a main road i may get jailed *sigh*.
So have i gone off on a tangent or are you guys still following along in my mud?
The whole point of the above is to enjoy the simple things in life. And everything has its own beauty even the ugly.
My other R&R has to do with the fact that my friends don't seem to enjoy each moment as it comes. Why do they have to place in context with something else? Like I know sometimes i do that as well, but honestly can one not enjoy a moment with out worrying about someone else or something else or thinking if only the situation was different?
Are all humans ingrained withthis sense of 'publicity'? hmmm
O well screw them and screw the world i'm gonna enjoy each moment as is and when ever it throws itself at me...why bloody not?
I will def continue this R&R session...I feel so much better already :)

Hey to all the Tolkien fans (me included) just thought I inform you of the great new development...I for one can't wait to get my grubby hands on it...after LOTR I hope this is a hit...heres a snippet about events unfolding...

J.R.R. Tolkien Has a New Book Coming Out
Just because he's dead doesn't mean he doesn't have a new book coming out. A new, previously unpublished work by J.R.R. Tolkien will hit bookstores in April, 2007.

Houghton Mifflin has acquired U.S. rights to publish the first complete book by J.R.R. Tolkien since the posthumous Silmarillion in 1977. HM bought American rights to The Children of Hürin from HarperCollins UK, which acquired the project from The Tolkien Estate in a world rights deal. Hürin, begun in 1918, was reconstructed by Christopher Tolkien, painstakingly editing together the complete work from his father’s many drafts, this book is the culmination of a 30-year endeavor by him to bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s vast body of unpublished work to a wide audience. HM will publish Hürin in April 2007, on the same day as HarperCollins' international editions. Janet Silver, v-p and publisher of Houghton Mifflin, said, "As J.R.R. Tolkien's original American publisher, dating back to The Hobbit, we are extremely proudto be bringing thisproject to Tolkien's devoted readership in the United States."

Actually, we're quite happy that Christopher Tolkien is taking the time to ensure that all of his father's work is finally published.

So i got home from work and decided to make pizza for supper. Was o so yummy, after Maghrib (prayers) i plopped down on the sofa to catch some cricket. SA vs SL. and o boy what a boring match it was...
Until Malinga came in with some awesome bowling...all we needed was 4 runs i tell ya...just 4 but SA had to go and give people heart attacks, I don't get these guys. First Kallis goes then we drop 3 more wickets and there we all thinking we losing...hmmm I feel sorry for the tail enders. Imagine the pressure for them and what a dose of adrenaline they getting. The ultimate flying drug coursing through their veins. Even Polly couldn't watch the end. What amazing tension...
But what superb bowling by Malinga.
All credit goes to him, I mean we were definitely cruising to a win till he came back with a vengeance. O and not forgetting VAAS. And Langerveldt. They definitely made the cricket yesterday entertaining...Otherwise it was turning into the rest of this WC totally boring (minus the killing of Woolmer and the upset wins against India and Pakistan)...
All In all I'd say SA were damn lucky

As you can see by the title of this post it kind of has something to do with Juns…
So Juns, finally decided to accompany me to the Time of the Writer’, which incidentally is running in its 10th year (I’m sure many people can not believe that fact!). That and the Film festival at campus are my two favorite things to go for… yes people I like all this cultural intelligence…
So I’m guessing you all wondering why the title for this blog piece…
Well Juns, I had a feeling, was highly bored during the whole process, even though he emphatically states he was not. (You know when a guy is lying when he keeps telling you otherwise) But I let him continue to believe he was impressing me ;) lol Just joking Juns stop having a heart attack…we already know what you think about it you posted on your blog already…Though is it the message or the medium you wish to acknowledge ;)

who says we have to make age matter?

how come society dictates that we should live by the age factor?

been having this conversation with a friend a few years younger then me and was wondering how is it that we are able to be such good friends pass the age barrier but as soon as we talk about a guy its inherent that I don't feel comfortable dating one younger than me. I know that the Prophet (SAW) was younger than Khadija (RA) but that still does not change the fact that i view life in this way.

Crash! Boom! Bang!

Yah so I went to the A1 it was F&^$ing awesome...But that was me. I love cars and bikes...and the roar of those car downshifting from speeds of 220 to 100 to take the bend or making it through the chicane without blowing their undercarriage was amazing.

The sun though did kill me... i have permanent sunglasses at the moment but I don't care I'd do the same thing over again just to hear the roar of an A1 (next time hopefully F1) car. Not forgetting the super cars they had after the main race...totally yummy...think Lambos and lotuses, Porches and even an Aston martin...totally mind blowing...
